ABOUT THE HUMAN-AI CO-CREATION PROCESS

We took inspiration from the song Daisy Bell (composed by Harry Dacre in 1892), which was the first song to be sung by a computer (the IBM 7094) in 1961. We wanted to capture the sweetness and inmacy of Daisy Bell, along with the strange juxtaposition and tension between human and machine that we needed to embrace to be able to write this song. We knew that using AI would take us in unexpected, chaotic directions, so we wanted to give the AI something specific to jump off of. We used an AI system (GPT-2) to generate lyrics “continuing” a line from Daisy Bell, and another AI (Melody-RNN) to create a melody “continuing” Daisy Bell’s melody. We also recorded our singer Brodie singing Daisy Bell and then we trained an AI called SampleRNN on just that audio recording. It wasn’t enough audio data to teach the AI to actually sing the song, so it just creates endless lile bits and syllables that sound kind of like Brodie and have a hint of the feeling of Daisy Bell. We put together the rest of the production around those parts, while using AI to create most of our sound design and samples. This included AI generated drum loops (GrooVAE), and lots more bits and pieces from SampleRNN.

LYRICS

I wanna be on time, up there in the clouds
Sending signs to those across the sky
Let me ask you a question, what's it like out here?
Do the cars come with pushups?
Does the people really wanna hang around?

Go on, listen to your body choir
Go on, listen to your body choir
What's your vibration?
What's your vibration?
Where are we what’s your vibration?
Where are we what’s your vibration?

This is my show this my show
Go hard when I’m on the floor on the floor
This is my song this my song
Go hard when I’m on the floor on the floor
