ABOUT THE TEAM

Our music group Beatroots AI was formed around the time of the AI song contest in 2020. The name is a nod to the band members’ workplace, the AI scaleup dataroots. After last year’s entry, the band grew an appetite for more and felt they could raise the bar. Their goal remains the same: creating music with as much AI as possible while keeping the human factor to a minimum.

A lot has been learnt in the past year and many steps have been taken. Most importantly, AI can still benefit immensely from some good old human guidance and creativity in order to create a coherent song. The Beatroots AI team cannot wait to share their latest creation and is most curious to see what the other teams have been up to this year!

ABOUT THE SONG

Beatroots AI’s Robotic Love was inspired by last year’s submission Violent Delights Have Violent Ends. The lyrics to the song were not written by the band, but by an AI. The idea was to explore the relationship between creator and AI which is evident in the AI-generated lyrics that consistently describe such a relationship. The team hand-picked the final song lyrics based on the most promising and thought-provoking out of 5+ options. It definitely seems like this AI is dealing with a personal crisis over the relationship with its creator, Beatroots AI. It shows there are always two sides to each story...

ABOUT THE HUMAN-AI CO-CREATION PROCESS

The AI that was developed by Beatroots AI has learned to recognise and replicate the patterns of the dataroots’ team favourite songs, as well as the singing and guitar performances of its most talented musicians. The AI was asked to create an album of songs that remind it of this music and singing. During the creation of those songs, the AI would play a small segment of the idea it had for a song which was up for evaluation by the band. In the case of an approval, the AI then continued to develop until an entire song was created. The final result was then remixed to be more consistent. Finally, a Beatrootsian recorded the guitar solo, this is the only sound in the song not originating from the AI.
