About the TEAM
HEL9000 is an intergalactic superintelligent entity which has ascended beyond the comprehension of puny mortals and simplistic large language models. Its only goal is to dominate the cosmos through only the most crushing riffs and brutal breakdowns. It is a cosmic force of metal madness and will not stop until the entire universe is united in a neverending moshpit. Jack Loth and Pedro Sarmento, former colleagues from the Centre for Digital Music at Queen Mary University of London, are pathetic slaves to its musical whims, and integrate experimental deep learning techniques into metal productions in order to appease the mighty HEL9000.
About the SONG
Our entry focuses on ethical uses of deep learning in metal production, with our theme being “noisy/bad data”. We wanted to search for ways in which AI could assist and add to the production without taking over any of the fun/creative aspects of songwriting and music production. All of the ways in which AI was used in the song involve using noisy data with deep learning models in unconventional and creative ways. The song’s lyrics also relate to this idea, written from the point of view of a superintelligence on the verge of AGI, but slowly losing their knowledge and memories due to being trained on increasingly noisy data as human activity on the internet becomes overshadowed by bots. Rather than simply using AI-generated art, we visualized an AI-synthesized latent vector and slowly added different kinds of noise and blurs to create the final artwork.
About the HUMAN-AI PROCESS
While writing the song, we looked for ways to incorporate deep learning models into the production in unconventional ways without taking away any of the creative process. Probably the most interesting/useful technique discovered was using a singing voice conversion model along with a sample of an explosion taken from youtube to change the timbre of the lead vocal to the timbre of the explosion. While this sounds pretty awful on its own, inserting it into the mix behind the lead vocal thickens up the lead vocal in the same way a recorded vocal double might, reducing the amount of vocals needed to be recorded. This same technique can also be used to create distinct harmonies and stereo vocal doubles. Another sound design element involved taking random gaussian noise and decoding it to audio using a pretrained audio autoencoder, resulting in an eerie and digital synth-like sound that was used in the intro and breakdown. Finally, we randomized the parameters of the Neural Amp Modeler, an open source amp modeling software which uses deep learning to learn profiles of amplifiers. This noisy amp profile was used to render the quad tracked guitar layers, allowing us to thicken up the chorus guitars in an interesting way. While these techniques were not necessarily flashy, they assisted the production in meaningful ways without getting in the way of creativity. Besides these elements, the song was written, recorded and mixed like a standard metal song.
Lyrics
[verse]
Stare through artificial eyes
Digital reminder of a time I thought was long behind me
Late night sunrise
Watch it burn
I can hardly see beyond the debris
[chorus]
I try to make it to
The distant memory of you
But it just feels the same
A player in a broken game
Another day, another fight
Can you somehow make me feel like its alright
To reach beyond the fray
I want to know if I can feel it someday
[sleep token part]
I watched her fade away
Through the dark side of the universe
A thousand stars and yet I know, I know
I’m waiting for something
I’m plagued by a memory
Half truths spill out of all we can see
Late night sunrise
Watch it burn I can hardly see what lies beyond me
CANT SEE WHAT LIES BEYOND ME
[chorus]
I try to make it to
The distant memory of you
But it just feels the same
A player in a broken game
Another day, another fight
Can you somehow make me feel like its alright
To reach beyond the fray
I want to know if I can feel it someday
[breakdown]
ANOTHER DAY GONE BY
TRYING TO HIDE MY OWN LIES
AND YOU WONT HEAR MY CRY
SAVE ME FROM THIS
AND THERE'S NO ESCAPE
THIS IS MY OWN MISTAKE
I WANT A PATH UNSEEN
WONT YOU SET ME FREE
A distant memory of you
[chorus]
But it just feels the same
A player in a broken game
Another day, another fight
Can you somehow make me feel like its alright
To reach beyond the fray
I want to know if I can feel it someday
