About the TEAM

Insane asylum escapees CJ & Zack (Dadabots) team up with South African slam death titans Vulvodynia, Australia’s dreamiest guitar heartthrob Plini, two deep learning metalheads running bare metal at QMUL AIM & ITTK, and the debut of new AI music lab Harmonai (non-profit, thousands of GPUs, underground music, open source). Why? Mischief.

About the SONG

The first prophecy of breakcore was fulfilled by p2p filesharing, when God gifted producers the entire history of recorded music as their sample library. The power! The second prophecy was fulfilled by neural synthesis upon revelation that all of it could be training data.

Nuns in a Moshpit is a 200bpm breakcore-AI gospel metal black-out mania that would confess its sins if it could only remember what just happened.

About the HUMAN-AI PROCESS

Does this song use an overly excessive display of AI production techniques? Were valuable PhD and R&D hours spent building totally new concepts for AI models, making them sound sick, just to generate a single 5 second riff in this song? A single moment that will pass us by.. ephemerally, like life?

Abso-freakin-lutely

Using eight different families of generative neural net, we created hundreds of assets (audio or MIDI), curated & arranged them  in Ableton into a breakcore style. CJ meticulously tweaked it until it made him feel things. There was a moment when it all came together and the transitions started making him cry real tears and laugh at the same time, exalted. Then we knew it was done.

We used both large multi-genre nets (which generalize), and smaller nets (which can overfit). We trained the smaller nets on the musicians (Vulvodynia and Plini) who joined the team.

== Our toolkit ==

Alongside the classics like SampleRNN (the sub-millisecond sequence generator that gives Plini bot's guitar solo expressive nuance) and Jukebox (it makes nuns go "Hail Satan"), our arsenal features several new weapons and weird inventions, highlighting our team's R&D efforts from the past year, powered by the large GPU cluster at Harmonai, including:

DadaGP - generates GuitarPro tabs in 700+ genres. We built it with a team at QMUL AIM!

Conceptular Synthesis - a dual-net RNN synth. One net learns the RNN states of the other!

Drum Diffusion - a net which learns to create (breakbeats) by iteratively denoising noise. Diffusion is currently state-of-the-art for image generation.

Qubit Neural Synth - a hybrid quantum ML model. It's a quantum circuit that produces entangled qubits that hook into a VAE. Sounds crazy, right? But their hyperspherical geometries make them a perfect fit.
