About the TEAM
Dr. Tristan Behrens is working as an AI freelancer and has already published 3 albums composed by AI. The name of this music project is „Hexagon Machine“. He is regularly teaching about the field of AI and music, both theoretical and practical. Some of Tristan’s favourite bands are Master Boot Record, Perturbator, Metallica and Rammstein. Dominika Heublein is his partner in crime. She holds a master’s degree in Indology and Digital Humanities. She loves projects which combine many topics into one. Singing is one of her many passions. Dominika’s favourite music ranges from the symphonic metal band Nightwish, Disney classics to Enya.
About the SONG
„Dancing with my Robot is a song about a girl and her robot. The robot is seen dancing with the girl and they have a good time. The robot is seen in a club dancing with the girl and the two are enjoying themselves. The song is about a love story between a girl and her robot. The girl has difficulties connecting to other humans. That is why the robot is her best friend. The twist is: The robot is in love with the girl.“
About the HUMAN-AI PROCESS
The whole creative process started with a Deep Neural Network that has been trained on hundreds of thousands of MIDI file of many different genres. It is GPT-2 with sequence-length 2048. We have trained this model ourselves.
We prompted said model to compose several bars of consistent music using MIDI-instruments that aligned with Synth-Pop and Synth-Wave. We desired to have an electronic feel to the music. To that end the model rested inside a proprietary AI composing tool of our own making, that made composing from scratch (with AI) and editing the musical material (with AI) a straightforward experience.
We queried the model multiple times over a period of roughly 30 minutes until we had the essential harmonies, rhythm, and melodies necessary for a full song. After that we imported the musical material into Logic Pro for arrangement. There we only added a handful of notes, 99% of the notes came from the Deep Neural Network. It took some time to select the right synthesizer settings for the song.
With the fundamental song ready, we started generating lyrics using OpenAI’s GPT-3. We generated multiple small texts as potential lyrics and only kept the texts that we found aesthetically pleasing. This process took 30-60 minutes. The text-prompt is above.
Once we had the notes and the lyrics, we recorded the vocals. This took 1h maximum.
